Kishorn Port & Dry Dock

Kishorn Port and Dry Dock is a 45 hectare site on the west coast of Scotland with a 160m diameter dry dock with up to 13.8m of water at MHWS over the sill. There is 450m of hard edged quay space and 4.5km2 of in-shore deep water lay down areas for wet stacking.

The site, formed in the 1970’s for the construction of the Ninian Central Platform has benefited from significant investments over the last 24 months with the following improvements being made:

Testing and resealing of the dock
1:9 concrete ramp access into the dock floor rated for 50t axle loads
New galvanised flood tunnels c/w fendering
Cathodic protection on the sheet piles
Self-sufficient pumping system & associated pump house
Fibre broadband ducting
The site is ideally located for decommissioning from the North Sea and further afield, with the following attributions:

Load bearing on dry dock floor of 200,000 tonnes
80m deep channel in Loch Kishorn
100m+ deep sheltered berths in Raasay Sound
On-site quarry with concrete batching facility and excellent aggregates
Stevedoring and transport facilities
Extensive hard standings and lay down areas
Contained area within dry dock
Planning permission for oil and gas related activities and decommissioning.
KPL is currently working with SEPA to obtain the relevant “authorisation” for Decommissioning floating structures & recycling where possible, with zero waste and circular economy, as part of an “Integrated authorised framework”

Lerwick Port Authority

Lerwick is one of the first UK ports to handle major offshore industry decommissioning projects. The port’s proximity to oil and gas activities in the northern North Sea and Atlantic, complemented by its deep-water capabilities, mean the harbour is ideally positioned to meet the needs of the industry in the recycling and disposal of large structures.

With two entrances, the sheltered, deep-water port is open to shipping in all weathers operating 24 hours a day, handling over 5,000 vessels per year. Lerwick’s natural attractions as an extensive, all-weather harbour are enhanced with modern infrastructure, much of which servicing the oil and gas industry, including decommissioning projects, to handle the latest construction/heavy lift and diving support vessels.

Dales Voe has been identified in a nation-wide feasibility study as the optimal location for the UK’s ultra deep-water decommissioning facility. It is an ideal location for an ultra-deep quay to allow Semi-Submersible Crane Vessels an alongside UK port solution for offshore operations and decommissioning.

Key advantages in using Lerwick Harbour include deep-water quays suitable for the largest offshore construction / supply vessels; reduced sailing times for SSCV and support vessels; reduced towage times; shorter sailing distances resulting in smaller weather windows required and a reduction in downtime offshore; zero port closures and facilities ideally suited to support offshore operations.
