Strength to strength with second year success

Subsea controls engineering specialists J+S Subsea is having twice the second anniversary celebration after announcing it has doubled its business in the past year.

J+S Subsea provides proactive, responsive and cost-effective solutions for design, engineering, operational support and maintenance of subsea equipment.

The company was formed two years ago, following a management buy-out of the subsea controls engineering division of SEA, a subsidiary of the independent technology group Cohort plc.

J+S Subsea spotted an opportunity to bring together an experienced team with the knowledge and expertise to push the net zero agenda in the North Sea oil & gas industry.

It has shown strong growth beyond its original UK market and aims to provide engineering services in other mature deep-water regions, with early success winning work in north and west Africa.

The company is also building on its existing work in marine renewables to explore opportunities in other emerging energy markets as both the UK and world transition to net zero.

Legacy Locker

The Legacy Locker is an open industry portal devised by J+S Subsea for the reuse, refurbishment and recycling of subsea equipment.

By acting as a marketplace for both procurement and disposal, it fulfils the dual purpose of avoiding a huge amount of fully functioning equipment being sent for scrap while giving access to all the spares that businesses need to maintain production.

With much of the existing offshore infrastructure now beyond its design life, Legacy Locker offers a sustainable and collaborative approach to the challenge.

It allows companies to realise the economic value of existing, unwanted capital equipment by providing somewhere to buy, sell or trade unwanted stock.

Industry recognition

J+S Subsea moved to new larger premises in Kintore last year, to acquire larger workshops and stores.

A certified Living Wage employer, the company is also a member of Decomm North Sea, Offshore Energies UK and the Global Underwater Hub.

Industry recognition has come through a steady stream of awards success.

Its first year was topped off with the award of Best Subsea Equipment Engineering Specialist in Corporate Vision’s Oil & Gas Awards. Their work on the Legacy Locker was shortlisted for the Excellence in Collaboration award at the Decom North Sea awards last year and they were a finalist in Best Small Company in the Subsea Expo awards earlier this year.

They were also finalists in the Manufacturing & Engineering Start-Up category of the national StartUp Awards, and recently business development engineer Tom Hutchison was announced as a Rising Star finalist in the Northern Star Business Awards 2023.

Positive and active

Managing director Phil Reid said: “Taking the decision to launch J+S Subsea felt like a huge risk back in 2020 when the world was in such a state of flux, not to mention the energy industry which was moving into a new phase.

“But since the management buy-out and reverting to the original J+S Subsea name, we have seen a lot of goodwill in the market, which has helped us push a positive and active profile.

“We feel like we are moving from strength to strength, with a brilliant team to drive our continuing success, using our technology to develop into new markets and winning new contracts.”
